Dusted’s “Still Single” reviews the RTFO Bandwagon 7″

May 6th, 2008

Dusted Magazine’s Doug Mosurock had this to say about the RTFO Bandwagon 7″ in his “Still Single” feature:

“Brent stole my “punx is hippiez” quote to market this single, but he’s a good dude and I am keeping my legal counsel at bay. But that’s kind of what’s going on here – folk punk of a hollerin’, earthy, discordantly jangled stripe that surfaced in the Mid-Atlantic and holes like Santa Cruz back in the mid-80s; Camper Van Beethoven, the Feral Family, Vomit Launch, Scrawl, and the Mekons all took a swing at this sound once upon a time and came up smiling, and my guess is that you will too. Shambolic, strummy, brightly tarnished sounds from Columbus, OH, featuring Rich from Psychedelic Horseshit on drums. 300 numbered copies; 50 with a blue vellum front cover. Pretty nice looking record from a new label that’s getting it right. “

In all fairness, we gave warning that we were stealing that line!  Be sure to check out the rest ofthe reviews, and dig into the archives.  “Still Single” is an incredibly valuable resource, and one our favorite stops on the internet.

dull knife mix #5

April 2nd, 2008

dull knife mix #5 is finally done and on the front counter of Sound Exchange. 30 copies, FREE.the new mix is not so new. it’s essentially a cd-r copy of the shake>some>action podcast i did several years ago with some minor variations. under the radar 70’s hard rock from around the globe. i think it has less impact now that a ton of this material has been reissued since the original mix, but it’s still good.Jason Killingher was generous enough to do the artwork for the mix. You may have seen his work on Acid Mothers Temple releases or Boris posters. he rules.i think this is the best looking and sounding mix yet.the next mix will be the first in a series of a few guest curated mixes. first up will will be a 70’s/80’s minimal synth mix compiled by the mysterious Blank Dogs.

Stop Talking

March 4th, 2008

Dusted Magazine’s “Still Single” feature has some terrific things to say about the Hearts of Animals 7″:

“Quite the find here, a natural bridge between straightforward indie pop traditions and some more daring territory, where I thought Tickley Feather might be headed. I’m much more fond of this Mlee Marie’s work when it’s abstract and loaded with delay, skronking horns, and a psychedelic/free mindset at play. And luckily, two of the four tracks here fit that description; opener “Stars Say No” being the hit, and the most far-reaching track here, and the repetitive gait of “Stop Talking” a mincing, relentless blast of blue sunshine. Truth be told, the pop songs are good too, just not as unique as the other tracks. Very excited to hear more of what she’s doing. Good one. 300 copies.”

Hearts of Animals has also been added to SXSW.  Mlee will be playing Saturday, March 15 at the Bourbon Rocks Patio (508 E 6th Street) with the great Cheveu from Paris, France and Monotonix from Israel.

Lastly, I wanted to remind everyone that dull knife puts on the occasional show for friends of ours.  One such show is rapidly approaching.  On Sunday, March 16 dull knife will present a pair of shows. ..

The first will be a 5:30PM in-store appearance at Sound Exchange by Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Pink Reason.  Each band will play a very short set of 2 or 3 songs that will be completely unlike their standard sets.

The night will be capped at The Mink’s Backroom, where we’ll present Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, Naked On The Vague, and Hearts of Animals

Show starts at 9:00PM SHARP, $8, 18+.  Click on the “Shows” section up top for more info on the shows, and to learn about future dull knife shows and artist shows.
